Tanzania's Favorite Destination, Serengeti

The Serengeti national park is probably the most popular destination in the whole of Tanzania. It is a great area for animal viewing and is located in a vast piece of land offering a comfortable natural habitat for the animals. Apart from animal life, the Serengeti is also home to thousands of bird species and is also very rich in plant life.

The area in the Serengeti is flat. This makes it easy to view animals as they do not have many places to take cover. It is a park that is well facilitated with the setting up of lodges and resorts. This help to a great extent to meet the needs of the tourists visiting the area every year. The design of the lodges depicts the African culture. This makes you appreciate Africa to a great extent. Despite of the location, the hospitality in the area is of a high quality.

Game viewing can be done in the area by use of vehicles, air balloons as well as light aircrafts. For those who want a more intimate date with the African jungle, the best option is to go for game walks. This will help you to use all your senses including smell, touch and sound. The thrill of an encounter with a wild animal is one that will excite animal lovers to a great extent. Treks will also help you appreciate the smaller details of the bush such as the insects as well as the capability to access the areas that would be inaccessible with the use of vehicles.

The greatest attraction in the Serengeti however is the great wildebeest migration that takes place every year. It does not always happen on a regular schedule as the migration periods differ from year to year. The animals are wild and their behavior depends to a great extent on weather patterns as well as the factors stipulated by nature. This makes predicting the actual time of this event a bit difficult.

The calving season of the wildebeest is usually around January and March. It can be viewed in the northern region of Serengeti as well as the Ngorongoro region. It is also a great time to be around. The first challenge is to cross river Grumeti where predators are on their heels trying to catch a meal. From here they move towards Kenya’s Masai Mara. They spend time in the Masai Mara till November and sometimes October. As the rains start in the Serengeti, they start their retreat to the area where they breed.

The cycle continues year in year out and is always an honor to be able to witness this great event.
